The Twighlight Zone

This morning was not unlike many mornings. I awoke a little earlier than normal, usually I wake up around 5:30 or a quarter to 6:00. As my Eyes began to focus I noticed first that it was still a little dark outside. The clock on the dresser with it's bright red numbers beaming back at me said 5:40 am.

Now on the weekends I continue my daily ritual of having coffee at my local coffee shop in Portland Or. The_University_Park_Coffee_Housedoes not open til 7:00 am on the weekends. So on the weekends I generally will languish an hour more in bed before getting up.

Just shortly after my dresser clock showed 7:00 am I was out the door into the heavy fog of this chilly Fall morning. As I pulled up to the curb I noticed that the Coffee Shops tent sign usually out on the street corner was missing. In fact the lights were out as well. Sure enough the door was locked. I quickly checked my watch and to my amazement noticed that it was almost 8:30am.

As I entered the restaurant next door, known to open at 8:00 am on the weekends I asked what time is it? It's 8:25 Jessica answered. Slightly bewildered I realized that the clock on the Dresser had reset itself last night for daylight savings time automatically a full week ahead of this years changed schedule.

Further confusing me was the fact that Shari had overslept and had not opened The University Park Coffee on time. For a brief moment I could see Rod Serling's sly little smile as I had taken a brief step into the Zone

Fall finds its way to Downtown Portland's Tree Lined Streets

Each and every Season has its own special feeling. Fall for me is a glorious time. It is a time for the changing of the guard so to speak. Ushering out Summer and transitioning into the Winter months that lay ahead.

During this transition period it is often easy to overlook the beauty of this season. Yesterday I awoke to feel that bite in the air and a slight frost had accumulated on the windshield of my car. I watched the daylight start to unfold while taking coffee at the University_Park_Coffee_House  in North Portland. The east wind breeze was starting to pick up a little and I began to notice that Fall was getting into full swing.

Yes indeed as I have been very busy helping people buy and sell homes here in the Portland area I almost missed this very special season. So yesterday after Coffee and doing some follow up for my current clients I took a moment out and drove through some of Downtown Portland Ore. tree lined streets to capture Falls Beauty.

I hope you enjoy the photo's as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Never Guide With a Whip

It is not often as Real Estate Agents that we are afforded the opportunity to watch our peers work. Strange as it may seem there are as many ways to conduct business as there are practitioners.

Even somewhat stranger, I would hazard to guess that most of us have received similar training in fact many of us have received that training from the same source. Yet we all seem to develop our own styles.

This last week was an extremely busy week for me. I had a couple of closings and have been busy working with Buyer's. The week ended with 4 offers written and accepted with this group of Buyers moving to Downtown Portland.

But this is not about my busy schedule as a Buyer's Agent or as a Seller's Agent. It is about Real Estate Agent's and their different styles while working with Buyer's.

It was during this busy showing schedule this last week that I and my Client's witnessed another agent working with her Buyer's. In fact we bumped into her on more than one occasion. Obviously we were working the same price range and the same area in downtown Portland.

What was strikingly different as to how we worked not only to me, but to my clients as well was the way she chose to shuffle the people through the home. All the while constantly chattering about her life, past buyer's experiences and features of the home that she loved but did not seem to resonate with her Buyer's.

Now I am kind of OLD SCHOOL when it comes to showing residential real estate. I prefer to let my client's discover the home on their own as we walk through it together, carefully making sure that they do not miss any features that were on their hot list. I am always quite prepared to answer any questions that come up, for most of the properties we see, I have previewed prior to showing.

It was obvious to all of us that this agent had not previewed any of the homes. It was also obvious that the Buyer's, specifically the husband was beginning to grow tired of her Sheep Herding style of showing property. In fact during a brief absence while the agent was trying to get the garage door open. We heard the two buyer's having a quick discussion. The husband wanted to call off the showings while his wife was trying to convince him to hang on as they may see something they liked. After all she remarked, they could always call someone else to write an offer. They quickly agreed sharing a quick smile between us and themselves just as the Sheep Herder reappeared continuing with her constant diatribe.

We did not run into the couple again but they were the subject of many a conversation there after as we speculated about what might transpire with their search for a home.

What about you? Do you drive your herd to Market with a Whip? Or do you allow them to Graze.
